<Need backup, Lab 6B, Moser wing, university. Prime has Judith—> Landon’s sudden communication had frozen Ben mid-sentence as he escorted Calista and Jason out of the Intelligence Services’ labs.

His heart stuttered; he hoped to hell he’d heard Landon wrong. <Landon! Say again?>

Jason and Calista had stopped and were staring at him with questioning looks on their faces.

“Ben?” Jason began, but the analyst held up his hand to stop his brother-in-law.

<Landon! Answer me!>

When there was no answer, he pinged Esther and then the Speedwell, initiating a team-wide combat net. He could hear his voice shake as he relayed Landon’s truncated message.

<I’ve pinged the Forty-Third Wing out there,> Esther’s voice sounded over the group connection. <They’re readying a pinnace for you over on the EF side of the base. Should be hot on the pad when you arrive. Logan’s already en route; he was here with us at Holdings.>

Jason and Calista had taken off running the minute they got the gist of the message, Tobi bounding behind them. Ben scrambled to follow.

“I’m coming with you!”

<We wouldn’t think of leaving you behind.> Tobias’ voice sounded reassuringly in his head as the analyst lost sight of the three. As he pushed himself harder, Samantha appeared on his right.

“I’m coming with you, too, sir.” The AI’s voice sounded grim. “And I have a team who will meet us there.”
